Removing doorway bottom plate in LGS thumbnail

Wall frames with doorways will arrive to site with the bottom plate still in place to ensure the frame retains dimensional tolerance while being moved. The bottom plate needs to be removed so the door can be hung properly and it is more efficient to precut the bottom plate prior to erecting the wall for ease of later removal.

Stage 1 - Partially pre-cut bottom plate (this is the preferred solution) by following these steps:

  1. Position the frame to allow safe access and positioning for cutting.
  2. Mark cut position 2-3mm inside the stud.
  3. Cut the bottom plate web using a grinder (with appropriate steel cutting blade) or cold saw, ensuring the cut extends up the flanges of the bottom plate only 3-5mm.
  4. Install frame.

Stage 2 - Removal of bottom plate

  • When the bottom plate is ready to be removed cut flanges with appropriate handed tin snips.
  • Deform sections of cut flanges outward to be removed.
  • Cut the bottom plate web using a grinder (with appropriate steel cutting blade) or cold saw, ensuring the cut extends up the flanges of the bottom plate only 3-5mm.
  • Cut the bottom plate web using a grinder.
  • Remove the bottom plate section.

Note that when frames are clean cut no further corrosion protection is required. If cutting is not clean (i.e. burred), best practice is to coat any exposed steel edges with zinc-rich paint (e.g. cold galvanised spray) to protect from future corrosion.
