Replacing a Damaged LGS Stud

Sometimes a frame component can be damaged. This could be the result of poor handling or incorrect storage on-site.

The steps needed to replace a stud are:

Determine if the member is load-bearing or not. If you are uncertain, assume it is a load-bearing member. All load-bearing members should be braced prior to removal to ensure the structural loads are correctly supported.
Unscrew the fasteners securing the damaged stud, including fasteners in the top plate so it can be hinged.
Release the stud.
If necessary, trim the damaged area so that it can pass through, or cut free of, the noggin for removal.
Remove the damaged stud.
Order a replacement stud from your manufacturer or cut one to size on-site. If you are cutting to size on-site, the replacement component must be the same size, thickness and steel grade.
Slide the new stud into place, align with the original holes and fasten in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
